Shazam: Fury of the Gods has not been well received by the audience at all. In fact, it is considered one of the worst films DC has offered in the last few years. Critics are bashing the film left, right, and center, and even though the fans seem to enjoy it just enough, the director has been left stunned by the critics’ response.
“I wasn’t expecting a repeat of the first movie critically, but I was still a little surprised because I think it’s a good film. Oh well,”
The star has previously mentioned how the post-credit scene was meant to be way different than what it ended up being. He mentioned that someone was responsible for thwarting their efforts to pull off the final post-credit scenes without dropping any names.
However, many assumed that it was likely Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson who was responsible for the whole ordeal. A DC executive has previously acknowledged how Johnson’s ego prevented Black Adam from being the success it could have been. Johnson refused to play the character as the villain he truly is and, in the effort, also ended up sabotaging the story of Shazam, the actual hero.
“The original intent was to have Hawkman and Cyclone be there to invite me… by the way, this is a little bit of a spoiler alert for anybody who hasn’t seen the movie,” said Levi. Sorry, whatever, it’s all online anyway. So, our intent, our desire — Walter Hamada, Peter Safran, David Sandberg, myself, everybody — we had an awesome scene that would have tied me into the JSA with Hawkman and with Cyclone, and we were thwarted.”
Since Black Adam and Shazam are clear rivals in the world of DC, The Justice Society of America was supposed to be there in the film, as Levi explains, but their plans were forced out and the post-credit ended up being completely different. This is the second time Levi and his team’s efforts have fallen flat when it comes to post-credit scenes.
Previously, Levi reportedly fought hard to have Henry Cavill appear in the first Shazam! film in 2019. However, in the end, the studios used someone else to appear as Superman. David F. Sandberg reported how the filming of the post-credit scenes “fell apart three days before we were going to roll cameras.”
Levi Blames No One
Now, after the immense backlash online from Dwayne Johnson fans, Zachary Levi went live on Instagram to talk about the issue. He mentioned how he had no hard feelings against any one person regarding the canceled plans for Shazam 2.
“I got flack about it because people were saying ‘Oh, What are you doing? You’re trying to blame this guy because your movie’s not doing well. Like you’re trying to blame us,’” he said on his Instagram page. “Listen, I haven’t blamed anybody. There’s not one single person that I have blamed for anything about the way that our movie has performed.”
Clearly, Levi is someone who knows how and when to stand his ground. The actor has always stood by his fans and tried to stay true to the material since day one of starting his role as the superhero.
“The reason I decided to share that was not that I wanna blame anybody for anything,” he explained very reasonably. “It’s because I do not want to be blamed for things that are not on me.”
Johnson and DC have had their own issues. The actor/producer has previously been accused of being controlling and trying to get all the attention for himself on other projects. Perhaps everything is connected.
