Get set, people! A new, lucky
group of actors will be on their way to Middle Earth. Amazon, the
renowned streaming service, announced on Tuesday that the casting for its
forthcoming TV series, “Lord of the Rings,” will draw lots of inspiration from
the classic books authored by J.R.R. Tolkien.
But since making this
announcement, especially when they informed Tolkien fans that they had obtained
the rights to shoot a “Lord of the Rings” TV show, Amazon has kept
mum on in-depth details about this fantasy epic.
However, here is the full
scoop about the remarkable Series, though it may take a while before we get to
watch the epic TV series on our screens:
When
will the TV Series Debut?
The streaming service,
Amazon, is going to start the production
phase of the Series in New Zealand come February. Judging from
how long it usually takes high fantasy series of this magnitude – i.e. with big
productions as well as computer-generated creatures – to make, it is quite
doubtful that Tolkien fans, casual and devoted, will see anything this year.
Will
the New Series be Called “Lord of the Rings?”
Amazon has not confirmed or
denied the official title of the TV series. They, however, stated that the
Series is based heavily on “The Lord of the Rings.”
What is this Fantasy Epic All
About and When Does it Take Place?
The Series will not be a
remake of the movies. It is not even taken directly from any of J.R.R.
Tolkien’s books, though it will include an entirely new set of characters and
events in Middle Earth.
But the Series is set long before
the events that took place in the Tolkien novels, in the “Rings”
timeline. The first season of the series will have 8 episodes.
Who
is Making the “Rings”-based Series?
This series is created by
Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne, who are TV newcomers. The first two episodes will
be directed by J.A. Bayona (director of “Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom”). He
would also be the executive producer along with Belén Atienza, his partner.
Other producers of the Series
include:
- Bruce Richmond (Game of Thrones)
- Lindsey Weber (10 Cloverfield Lane)
- Jason Cahill (The Sopranos)
- Gennifer Hutchison (Breaking Bad)
- Sharon Tal Yguado
- Justin Doble (Stranger Things)
- Gene Kelly (Boardwalk Empire)
Cast
The actors that will
participate in this huge project are mostly unknown and quite diverse. They
will make up the principal cast of the TV series, though more announcements are
expected from the streaming service.
“Game of Thrones” fans will
see a few familiar faces such as Joseph Mawle who played Benjen Stark and
Robert Aramayo, who played young Ned Stark.
In typical “Lord of the
Rings” fashion, Tolkien fans should expect to see a lot of magic from
elves, witches and wizards that walk the Middle Earth. But it is not certain
whether the old characters Gandalf and others will be featured.
