Victoria Alonso’s Attorney Speaks Up About Marvel Firing Her From Executive Position

The firing of Marvel’s exec Victoria Alonso has been pretty public. She used to serve as the President of Physical, Post Production, VFX, and Animation at Marvel. She was removed from her position over the breaching of a 2018 contract which basically prevented her from working with other competing studios. Her attorney has now gone very public, stating how Marvel completely supported her investment in her new project in Argentina, in 1985.

The film was distributed by Amazon and was a competing film for Best International Feature at the Oscars. However, the exec was then removed, which was not taken well by her, and the move has also left the industry stunned since it was just too sudden.

Argentina, 1985 Vs. Marvel

Alonso was a part of the top three members of the Marvel world. Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, and herself. The three are responsible for putting out a lot of Marvel content over the previous five years. However, Alonso also wanted to be a part of Argentina, in 1985, being from Argentina herself, historical drama was a big passion project for her. But it backfired and eventually got her removed from Marvel.

Many sources have claimed that Alonso did not seek permission before becoming aligned with the film. It was also said that she did not notify Marvel about her involvement, and when Marvel found out, they gave her a notice to immediately cease working with the film. She was also barred from promoting the film, but clearly, Alonso did not follow through.

However, IndieWire claimed that Alonso did have permission, and the same was restated by her attorney recently in a very bold statement regarding the firing of her client:

“The idea that Victoria was fired over a handful of press interviews relating to a personal passion project about human rights and democracy that was nominated for an Oscar and which she got Disney’s blessing to work on is absolutely ridiculous.” Said Patty Glaser in her most recent statement regarding her firing.

Victoria Alonso Promoting Against Marvel

At the Oscars, Alonso was seen promoting Argentina, in 1985 and was also seen with the director of the film Santiago Mitre. She was attending the Oscars as a producer of the film and not as a Marvel executive for their movie Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which was nominated in several categories.

This clearly did not sit right with Marvel. It was also important to note that Marvel had tons of work up and running at the time. Antman and The Wasp: Quantumania was on the brink of release right before the Oscars and was not released very well when it was finally released. Many people have been giving slack to Marvel’s lazy VFX work since shoes like She-Hulk: Attorney At Law and subsequent movies did not impress the audience.

There are also those who wonder if Victoria Alonso was fired over her firm stance on the rights of the LGBTQ community. Alonso is openly gay and has always been a firm activist who has been outspoken against inhumane laws.

“Victoria, a gay Latina who had the courage to criticize Disney, was silenced. Then she was terminated when she refused to do something she believed was reprehensible,” said Glasser. “Disney and Marvel made a really poor decision that will have serious consequences.”

Disney was convinced to take a stand against Florida’s ‘Don’t Say Gay bill, which prevented school personnel from teaching students in the third grade or below about sexual orientation. As a result of this stance, Disney lost their special tax status from the government. The bill was passed, and Disney’s stance likely cost the company millions in taxes.
