Top 5 Box Office Winners of 2019 so far

2019 has been a massive year for Marvel Studio so far with four out of five of its titles: Avengers EndgameCaptain MarvelAladdin, and Toy Story 4 leading the Box Office at numbers one to four while the fifth movie, Dumbo made a respectable showing at number eleven at the home front.

On the international scene, all five movies made it to the top twenty grossing films worldwide. Three of the titles are leading the pack at numbers one to three, one at number six, and another at number eleven.

While Disney is coasting home on several fronts, the same cannot be said of other movie studios. A look at the charts show the industry as a whole is struggling, notwithstanding that one of the all-time grossing movies was released early this year.

Ticket sales in 2019 are at an all-time low. Compared to this time last year and in 2017, the estimated movie attendance is down at 8.5 percent and 0.5 percent respectively.

It’s not all gloomy though, as the drop happened in the first half of the year, hopefully, with the avalanche of big movies lined up for release in the latter part of the year, we can start seeing the industry pick up the slack.

That said, let’s step back a bit and take a look at some of the top Box Office winners of 2019 so far.

Disney

Of course, with four of its five movie releases so far topping the domestic Box Office grossing a combined ticket sale of 201 million with Avengers’ Endgame grossing 93.4 million, Captain Marvel at 47.4 million, Aladdin at 33.9 million, and Toy Story 4 coming in at 26.3 million, Disney is on course to ending the year on high.

Also, considering the big titles all lined up for release later in the year, one can only expect to see Disney crushing the numbers and even setting new industry records.

Jordan Peele

Sitting snugly at the number five position on the domestic Box Office, Jordan Peele’s Us is certainly one of the most anticipated movies of the year that well exceeded expectations.

Raking in over 70 million dollars, which is way above the industry tracking expected earning pegged at anything from $45-50 million.

Interestingly, Us which is a follow up to Jordan Peele’s 2017 Get Out, is outranking its predecessor which was at the seventh position when it was first released back in 2017 given that the ticket sales are roughly the same for both movies.

This trend, can, of course, be attributed to the fact that there aren’t too many movies doing pretty well at the moment.

John Wick

At a time when other franchise series is floundering, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum is headlining the box office in its debut weekend grossing over $56 million and the best part of all, finally toppling Endgame from the number one spot.

Though the movie is currently holding out on the sixth position on the domestic grossing chart with 17.9 million tickets sold. Undoubtedly, this third installment in the John Wick series has established the tri-quel as a major franchise in its own right.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

DreamWorks Animation title How to Train your Dragon currently occupies the seventh position as the highest grossing movie so far in 2019 raking in over $55 million in its first weekend at the domestic box office.

Internationally, it sits pretty at number five grossing $359.0 million, which is 69.1 percent of the total ticket sales so far.

Now, that’s a pretty strong run considering how the other titles in the franchise have fared on their opening weekend. How to Train your Dragon 2 made $49.5 million in its first weekend in 2014 and went on to just over $177 million for its domestic run. Following a $43.7 million opening, the first movie in the franchise went to settle in at $217.5 million.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu

Warner Bro’s Detective Pikachu at $58 million is the all-time grossing film for a video game adaption dethroning 2001’s Lara Croft Tomb Raider ($47.7 million)

While on its international run, it grossed $284.8 million, which is 66.6% of the total earning so far.
