It has been a rollercoaster year so far what with Avengers Endgame shattering the all-time grossing movie record only behind the Titanic; and major bombs like “The Kid Who Would be Kid” from director Joe Cornish.
All right, sit back as we bring you the losers of 2019 so far.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix
Don’t know if it’s due to the prolonged delay in releasing the follow-up move to X-Men: Apocalypse or due to its poor review.
But, one thing everyone agrees – everyone in this case includes, the critics, movie trackers, movie goers, and even the studios themselves – is that Dark Phoenix is the worst performing series in this long running franchise.
Dark Phoenix entered the opening weekend as the worst reviewed movie on the X-Men franchise. Expectedly, it didn’t disappoint as it struggled to scrap by $33 million; becoming the first movie in the X-Men franchise history to get pass the $50 million opening weekend.
Replicas
Replica bombed big time both financially and draw for moviegoers. It is undoubtedly the worst performing wide release from producer Keanu Reeve.
As if that’s not enough, it suffered the 9thworst second-week drop by 81.5 percent of all time.
Shaft
Shaft – err mm, yeah was supposed to serve as a sequel to the last two shaft movies of the same name.
The last of the Shaft – that’s before this recent release – was 19 years ago. The producers were hoping the latest release will serve as the reboot to this franchise unfortunately, it seems movie goers want something else – to trash the title.
Shaft on its wide release garnered only $8.3 million which is a far cry from its projected $20 million opening take while clinging to sixth position on the charts.
By the second week showing, it has already fallen completely out of the top 10 grossing just $3.6 million.
The Kid Who Would Be King
It has been a hit and miss thing for Fox this year. Aside from Bohemian Rhapsody which has a decent showing, it’s being no prisoner taken for the studio’s final year.
Though, The Kid Who Would Be King isn’t so bad, as the numbers make it look, unfortunately moviegoers couldn’t work up the appetite to see the film.
And when you consider that overall Fox might have lost anything in the range of $50 million on the project, you’d also make the Bomb call on the movie.
Serenity
Maybe the directors and producers set out to make the worst movie ever? Serenity opened on the domestic market to a meagre $44 million.
But, that’s not even what seems to make the movie suck, its because Aviron Pictures which was supposed to market the film passed up on it. So, it’s not surprising why flick lovers choose not to watch it.
