The 43rd Golden Raspberry Awards named many films and actors as the worst of the year. In fact, for the first time in Razzies history, the award function gave itself an award after the huge blunder of nominating a 12-year-old actress for the worst performance.
That’s right, the Golden Raspberry Awards, more popularly known as the Razzies, were caught up in a controversy after they nominated Ryan Kiera Armstrong as Worst Actress of The Year for her role in the film Firestarter. Many criticized the awards for bullying a child actress, after which the Razzies introduced an age bar for their winners and nominees, making sure no child performer gets nominated again.
Worst Of The Year
Ana de Armas’ film Blonde was named the worst picture of the year. The film has a total of eight nominations at the Razzies and won two of them, which also included worst screenplay. Interestingly, Armas’ is also nominated for Best Female Actress performance at the Oscars, which will be held on the 12th of March. The film was called out for being a horrible portrayal of an actual living figure. The Razzies called the film “misogynistic, salacious and fallacious,” adding that it “shamelessly exploits the memory of the late Marilyn Monroe.”
Many can see why this criticism is welcomed and understood. In fact, there are also many who doubt Armas’ nomination for the Oscars in the first place, while deserving black female actresses like Viola Davis for The Woman Kingand Danielle Deadwyler for Till were completely ignored as potential nominees. But the Razzies did not just stop there.
They also awarded Tom Hanks for Worst Supporting Actor in Elvis as well as Worst Screen Combo. Elvis is currently the front-runner for the Oscars bid. Actor Austin Butler has already won awards for his performance as Elvis Presley, and it doesn’t look like he’s about to stop any time soon.
