By now, you already know Taylor Swift’s much anticipated new album “Lover” dropped late last week. And, it is reported to have three tracks written entirely by the singer.
In a tweet announcing the release of the album Thursday, she said: “This album is very much a celebration of love, in all its complexity, coziness, and chaos.
It’s the first album of mine I’ve ever owned, and I couldn’t be more proud. I’m so excited that #Lover is out NOW.”
The new album is Swift’s seventh studio record. It is an 18-track album that digs deep into her personal life and relationships including several songs that are clearly about her relationship with her British actor Joe Alwyn.
In the “London Boy” she gushes about how much she loves London and of course her boyfriend.
“You know I love a London boy
I enjoy walking Camden Market in the afternoon
He likes my American smile, like a child when our eyes meet
Darling, I fancy you
Took me back to Highgate, met all of his best mates
So, I guess all the rumors are true
You know I love a London boy.”
She also talked about how she enjoyed nights out in Brixton and visiting Shoreditch in the afternoon.
And then in track number four “The Man” Swift went all out against society’s double standards. She wondered how her career would have turned out if she were a male celebrity.
“I would be complex, I would be cool
They’d say I played the field before I found someone to commit to
And that would be okay for me to do
Every conquest I had made would make me more of a boss to you
The first stanza in the track clearly describes what every woman knows too well, a society and media that has one set of rules for men and an entirely different one for women.
Her frustration could be clearly heard in the chorus:
“I’m so sick of running as fast as I can
Wondering if I’d get there quicker if I was a man
And I’m so sick of them coming at me again
Causing if I was a man, then I’d be the man.”
Though, some have wondered whether Swift wrote “The Man” as a response to the whole Scooter Braun and Scott Borchetta debacle. In an open letter back in June, Swift wrote she had asked pleaded for a chance to own her work.
And the internet is going into a frenzy
Reactions from fans have trailed the release of the new album with fans nearly social media into a meltdown.
A Twitter user @Ts7Track2 said: “When Taylor said, “I Thought Love Was BURNING RED, but it’s Golden” in Daylight I FELT THAT GROWTH. #LOVER
Oscar Gracey, with the twitter handle @oscargracey, tweeted: “the drama! The range! The emotion!!! The flavor!!!!!!! #Lover is more than Taylor Swift’s best album, it’s an absolute musical masterpiece.”
Swift scores the bestselling album of 2019 with “Lover.”
Barely 48 hours after the release of the album, Lover has sold nearly 500,000 copies to unseat Lady Gaga, and Bradley Cooper’s “A Star Is Born” soundtrack which has sold 444,000 copies as the bestselling album of 2019.
