For many years, mentioning Katy Perry and Taylor Swift in the same sentence would likely lead to stories of their latest bust up. Back in 2012, Swift and Perry were sharing three well-known backing dancers. When Perry wanted to tour again, the three were with Swift but chose to jump ship, and this is thought to be the start of one of music’s fiercest feuds.
However, regardless of what happened in the past, the two have now put the feud behind them and Swift has a message for the world; ‘You Need to Calm Down’.
Stopping the Hate and Ending Feuds
In a song full of messages regarding social media and the LGBTQ community, controlling urges to ‘scream about all the people you hate’, and how she sees ‘you over there on the internet’, fans have been quick to praise Swift. As the name suggests, the overall message is for people to calm down and stop the hate online and in real life…and we’re all for it.
Speaking to Apple Music’s Beats 1, Swift noted how some people go out of their way to spread negativity. She said, ‘It just made me feel like, ‘You need to just calm down. Like, you’re stressing yourself out. This seems like it’s more about you than what you’re going off about’.
Good Morning America Premiere
As well as the message, the music video, which launched early on Monday morning, has also received lots of attention. First and foremost, Katy Perry makes a special appearance and the two share a heart-warming hug. In a post that nearly received one million likes on Instagram within the first hour, Perry posted the still from the music video with the caption, ‘This meal is BEEF-free #MeatFreeMonday’.
Meanwhile, Taylor Swift posted at almost the same time saying, ‘A happy meal’. Both posts are in reference to the outfits (or rather costumes!) being worn by the pair. While Swift is dressed as a carton of fries, Perry finds herself in a huge burger costume.
Fans woke up to a treat as the music video was premiered on Good Morning America. Set in a trailer park, the list of celebrity names is a long one and includes Ryan Reynolds, Ciara, Ellen DeGeneres, Adam Lambert, Laverne Cox, Dexter Mayfield, Antoni Porowski, RuPaul, and Chester Lockhart.
According to GLAAD, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, they experienced a severe increase in the number of donations after the video release as their name appears in the lyrics of the song. Since thirteen is Swift’s favorite number, many fans even took to donating $13.
For those who love the new song and are craving more from Taylor Swift, her new album Loveris expected on August 23. As the seventh studio album from the popular singer (still in her twenties, by the way!), it will also include the collaboration with Brendon Urie, ME!.
