In sports, emotions do once in a while, get the best of sportspeople.
And couple of days ago, we saw just how nasty things go get when feelings get
in the way.
Two female tennis professional players brawled on court
following an overly aggressive post-match handshake in the Henderson Tennis Open in Las Vegas.
American player Alycia Parks accused Canadian Katherine
Sebov, 20, of squeezing her hands hander than anyone else.
From the footage, Alycia is seen throwing her racket on the
ground in frustration after the match ended 6-0, 7-6 in favor of Sebov. Then,
walking towards the net for the obligatory post-match handshake with her
opponent.
The umpire is seen jumping down real quick from his chair to
separate the players as Parks appears to have thrown a jab at her rival.
The American youngster was left fuming after Sebov
‘aggressively’ squeezed her hands.
In a turn of comic relieve, Park’s coach tumbled over as he
tried to scale the fence to get involved in the scuffle before launching a
tirade at the umpire.
“Come on forfeit her, forfeit her – you see what we go through,” he said spreading his hands. “She squeezed her hand, forfeit her.”
“The match is over,” an official replied.
“See, you see what we go through,” the coach continued his
barrage. “Y’all see what we go through? Y’all saw that. Everybody saw. Forfeit
that garbage. Look at that crap…you wonder why Serena do the crap she do.”
Meanwhile, Park has taken to Twitter to explain her own side
of the story, alleging Sebov slapped her hand.
“So about this whole video situation, after the last point I walked to the net the opponent slapped my hand and squeezed it harder than anyone else with aggression,” she tweeted.
“I told the ref what happened, if you could see that’s why he climbed down from his chair before we could even shake
“He wouldn’t say anything to her so I walked to her to say don’t ever squeeze my hands again. The opponent turns around and gets big and reaches towards me with full force and pushes me twice
“On top of that, if you won the match why are you squeezing
my hand in aggression looked at me with anger and pushed my arm back after the
handshake instead of letting go lightly?”
Fellow US tennis player, Sachia Vickery collaborated her
story, tweeting: “I was there she def squeezed her hand at the net.
“I hope they don’t try to spin this. The ref clearly says he saw it. Won’t be shocked if nothing is done about it tho[ugh] p.s. hold the racist comments and claims that Alicia acting ‘ghetto’.”
As expected, many people are chipping in their opinion. A
Twitter user Dave (@DavePhilips1) tweeted:
“I agree she showed bad form but you needed to walk away like
an adult. Going after her made you look like the aggressor in the video. And
your dad looked like a complete jack ass. Love how he tried to make this a
racial thing. Rise above the hate next time. God bless.”
The International Tennis Federation have however opened an
investigation into the incident.
