Over the years,
the halftime show at the Super Bowl has become almost as big as the main event
itself. Now, it has been revealed that Shakira and Jennifer
Lopez will
come together to entertain the Miami crowd at the beginning of next year.
In an
announcement from the NFL and Pepsi during the Packers vs Eagles game last
night, the two appeared in an interview and spoke about their excitement for
the show. Not only are they happy to be doing the show in general, the two
noted their joy that two Latino artists were chosen for what is a ‘very
Latino town’.
Lopez said, ‘I love that the Super Bowl has two women performing this year. That they have two Latinos performing this year. It’s the marker of a new time, not just for the NFL but for this country. It sends an important message.’
What
Will They Bring?
Of course, the
halftime show gets reviews of its own and it has become more than just a
performance. With this in mind, Lopez noted how it will be ‘a statement of
love and unity and making everybody come together just for a moment.’ They
also seem to be aware of the history of the halftime show as Lopez added ‘hopefully
(the show) resonates for a long time.’
At this point
in time, the pair admitted that they haven’t spoken about the show itself just
yet, so we can’t provide you with any details here. However, the two were
openly praising each other during the short interview.
In recent
weeks, we’ve heard several rumors that there will be a number of acts to
celebrate the event and to have a great time in Miami. If Lopez and Shakira are just the starting point, it
looks as though we’ve got something to look forward to when the NFL season
comes to a close.
History
of the Halftime Show
From great
singing to performances that outshone the game to pure controversy, the
halftime show has seen it all through the years. In 2004, Justin
Timberlake and Janet Jackson
were set to create history as they came together for ‘Rock Your Body’. Moments
later, Jackson’s bare breast was exposed accidentally, and CBS were charged
$550,000. Imagine what would have happened had social media been around back
then!
In terms of great
performances over the years,
who can forget Prince singing Purple Rain in the pouring rain in
Florida? For many, this is the best halftime show of all time as the eccentric artist
went from beautiful covers to a haunting rendition of the crowd favorite, Purple
Rain. In a stadium full of football fans, everything suddenly turned into a
Prince concert and the crowd were singing along in a moment that sends shivers
through the body.
Will Shakira and Jennifer Lopez reach these heights? We can’t wait to find out!
