Russian Doll fame Natasha Lyonne stars in Rian Johnson’s brand new Peacock series Poker Face, a show where ‘strange new crimes’ surround main character Charlie Cale and she just has to solve every single one of them. The series comes after the global acclaim of Knives Out and Glass Onion. The director has a knack for making dark comedy dramas where someone is always lying, and someone is always making sure the liar and the murderer get caught. Now, the Peacock series has been renewed for a second season, so what’s new?
About Poker Face
The show’s makers decided to experiment with release formats a bit by initially dropping four episodes all at once. The next episodes came out individually on a weekly basis moving forward, with every episode a unique murder mystery of its own. Director Rian Johnson has previously directed Star Wars: The Last Jedi along with the Knives Out films. This is his very first series, and he wanted to keep the format of Knives Out very much alive in this project as well.
Susan Rovner spoke with The Hollywood Reporter singing praise for the amazing series:
“It’s performed fantastically. We are over the moon,” she said. “Poker Face is one of those rare, undeniable shows that we all fell in love with from the start, but the critical acclaim and viewer response has been beyond our wildest dreams. Working alongside the creative genius of Rian Johnson, Natasha Lyonne, and Ram Bergman, along with our partners at MRC and T-Street, has been a spectacular ride, and we can’t wait to hit the road for another season as we continue to build momentum across Peacock’s originals slate.”
Clearly, the series is very well deserving of a second season. Fans are obviously excited, but the format of the story itself has director Rian Johnson convinced that he can, in fact, ‘grow old’ by making the rest of the show. Every episode is almost anthological in nature, with only Natasha Lyonne’s character permanently recurring. Here’s what Johnson had to say in his interview with The Hollywood Reporter:
“Natasha and I keep talking about getting old doing this. I can imagine her Jessica Fletcher-ing it. And I would be thrilled. … This is something that’s obviously built with an engine to keep on going.”
Star Natasha Lyonne also made a brief appearance in Johnson’s last film Glass Onion, and now she’s the star of his new show. The two are all set to make Poker Face a long-term success.
