It appears Donald Trump picked the wrong celebrity couple to
bully on Sunday night.
President Trump went on a Twitter meltdown after musician John
Legend was featured in a late-night MSNBC special report on the criminal justice system.
During the show, the Grammy award winner spoke to Lester Holt
about the disparity in what he called the country’s “broken criminal justice
system.”
“Tonight, at 7p PT/10pm ET, I will be joining @LesterHoltNBC for
an @NBCNews Town Hall on @MSNBC to discuss our country’s broken criminal
justice system. Follow @LetsFreeAmerica to learn more about my work to end mass
incarceration. #JusticeForAll,” Legend tweeted on his Twitter account.
Mr President got offended that he wasn’t given enough credit for
his role in passing the criminal justice reform bill. In a series of tweet, he
targeted John Legend and his wife, Chrissy Teigen.
He tweeted: “When all of the people pushing so hard for Criminal
Justice Reform were unable to come even close to getting it done, they came to
me as a group and asked for my help.”
“I got it [criminal justice reform] done with a group of
Senators and others who would never have gone for it. Obama couldn’t come
close.”
Well, this is not the first time President Trump will be
targeting entertainment celebrities over what he perceives to be ingratitude.
Actress Debra Messing was at the receiving end of Trump’s social media meltdown
couple of weeks ago over her political views.
A bit of background
In December 2018, Trump signed into law a bill that seeks to
reform the criminal justice system.
The First Step Act, when fully in force, will shorten sentences for nonviolent
crimes and expand job training and other programs for inmates. The signing into
law of the bill was widely praised, and Mr President called the effort “a great
bi-partisan achievement for everybody.”
Back to his rant: “A man named @VanJoses68, and many others,
were profusely grateful (at the time!), I SIGNED IT INTO LAW, no one else did,
and Republicans deserve much credit. But now that it is passed, people that had
virtually nothing to do with it are taking the praise.”
“Guys like boring musician @johnlegend, and his filthy-mouthed
wife, are talking now about how great it is – but I didn’t see them around when
we needed help getting it passed.”
“Anchor @LesterHoltNBC doesn’t even bring up the subject of
President Trump or the Republicans when talking about the importance or passage
of Criminal Justice Reform. They only talk about the minor players or people
that had nothing to do with it,” he fumed.
And the Legends’ reacted
“Imagine being president of a whole country and spending your Sunday night hate-watching somebody-ANYBODY-will praise you.”
“Melania, please praise this man. He needs you… Your country needs you, Melania,” John replied.
Chrissy followed up with her reply:
“The absolute best part of his tweet is I literally didn’t speak in the special, nor was I mentioned. I’m cackling at the pointless addition of me because he cannot not be a bitch.”
