Penn Badgley, most famous for the Netflix series You, has requested the showrunners to have fewer sex scenes in the next season of the show. He talks about how the scenes can hurt the image of the fidelity of his marriage and how being loyal to his marriage is very important to him. While the show is very famous for raunchy scenes and relationships between characters, it is also important to respect the integrity of the actors working in front of the camera. The artist opened up about the issue on his own podcast called Podcrushed. He also talked about his interest in always being a romantic lead character.
Marriage and Work
Penn Badgley is married to Domino Kirke. The two have been together since 2017. He feels that overly intimate scenes have the potential to hurt the fidelity of his marriage, which is very important to him. So, he asked the showrunner of You if he could stop with the intimate scenes. The actor acknowledges that since the show has him playing a romantic lead, having no sex scenes is not entirely within the scope of possibilities:
“I signed this contract,” he said in his podcast. “I signed up for this show. I know what I did. You can’t take this aspect out of the DNA of the concept, so how much less can you make it was my question to them.”
The showrunner was very empathic and understanding while hearing Badgley out. The creators workshopped the whole idea, and the newer drafts would have a lot fewer intimate scenes with Badgley in them. This was a very overwhelming and positive experience for the actor, who said:
“She was really glad that I was that honest, and she was sort of, I wanna say almost empowered,” he said. “She had a really positive response. She appreciated my directness, and she appreciated that I was also being reasonable and practical, and they came back with a phenomenal reduction.”
The show so far has three seasons, with the fourth one in the making. Netflix approved and ordered a fourth season of the show back in October 2021.
