The Oscar field is getting
set as nominations were announced Monday morning. However, many Oscar hopefuls
missed out on nominations while
someone – e.g. Todd Phillips, director of “Joker” and best actor for Joaquin
Phoenix – garnered up to 11 nominations.
Sad to say, but these top 8
stars were snubbed, and will not compete for gold glory during the 92nd
Annual Academy Awards ceremony that will air February 9 (ABC, 8
p.m. ET/5 PT):
Jennifer Lopez
It is no longer news that
J.Lo, as she’s popularly called was widely predicted to take home the gold for
Best Supporting Actress for her astonishing performance in
“Hustlers.”
This was even after she had
won the SAG Award and been nominated for Critic’s Choice and Golden Globe.
But the music star has been
unroyally excluded from the list of Oscar nominees, and this has sparked a
quick outcry on social media.
Robert De Niro
This legendary actor came
back with a fantastic performance in Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” a
movie named for his hitman Frank Sheeran. But the two-time Oscar winner missed
out on Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe nominations.
And this clearly showed that
the actor’s critically-praised role had been eclipsed as a result of the
crowded actor field which included best supporting nominations for Al Pacino
and Joe Pesci who were co-stars.
Nicole Kidman
Nicole was heavily praised
for her smashing role in “Bombshell” as Gretchen Carlson.
Although Kidman’s character
was not taken into account, Charlize Theron was nominated for the lead role she
portrayed as Megyn Kelly and Margot Robbie as best supporting actress.
Lupita Nyong’o
Lupita Nyong’o gave two
impressive performance in “Us,” Jordan Peele’s horror film. Her characters were
sharply contrasting as she portrayed Adelaide and Red, her evil doppelganger.
Nyong’o once won Best
Supporting Actress in “!2 Years a Slave,” a 2013 movie. However, Academy
members have denied her a second nomination.
Eddie Murphy
In “Dolemite Is My Name,”
Murphy’s role as Rudy Ray Moore, real-life movie legend, endeared him to movie
buffs in 2019. There was no doubt that he would have clinched a spot during
Oscar nominations if he had won a Golden Globe.
But Murphy was surprisingly
beaten to it by Taron Egerton, the star of “Rocketman.” The “Coming to America”
star came up short for best actor on Monday.
Christian Bale
Bale is a four-time Oscar
nominee that won an Oscar in 2011’s “The Fighter” as Best Supporting Actor. He
did amazingly well as a stubborn, eccentric British race driver and engineer
Ken Miles in James Mangold’s “Ford v Ferrari.”
But it wasn’t enough to win
the confidence of Academy voters.
Willem Dafoe
Dafoe has two acting
nominations under his belt for cherished art-house movies “The Florida Project”
and “At Eternity’s Gate.”
But his role as a
rambunctious lighthouse keeper who struggles to keep back his sanity in “The
Lighthouse” was not considered during nominations.
Beyoncé
A few people were
disappointed when Beyoncé’s “Spirit,” the original song from “The Lion King”
soundtrack was not included in the list for best song.
It is also glaring that Beyoncé
may not perform at the Oscar ceremony.
