As The Lion King continues to attract crowds around the world, it has lit up the box office charts in recent weeks. However, it looks as though the latest instalment of the Fast & Furious franchise, Hobbs & Shaw, will take the number one spot this weekend.

For all Fast & Furious fans, it’s an interesting time. With the last movie coming two years ago, fans are well aware that the next instalment could well be a year away. Therefore, it seems people have taken to Hobbs & Shaw

Starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, two characters from the main movies, this is widely considered a ‘spin-off’. So far, it has been a success and has taken nearly $200 million around the world ($60 million in the United States).

Altogether, the Fast & Furious franchise has brought in revenues of nearly $5 billion so perhaps the early success of Hobbs & Shaw isn’t a surprise. What’s more, there are plenty of famous faces for viewers to enjoy. Alongside Johnson and Statham, there are appearances from Helen Mirren, Idris Elba, and others.

Behind the camera, the big names continue since the movie was directed by David Leitch; the man responsible for the second Deadpool movie.

Battle for Second

Elsewhere, there’s expected to be a battle for second place this weekend. While Hobbs & Shaw comfortably takes first place, the second spot is currently between The Lion King and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (Quentin Tarantino’s new movie).

Last weekend, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood took over $40 million in the US. With Margot Robbie, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Brad Pitt leading this Tarantino picture, further success is predicted for this weekend.

If you’re heading to the cinema this weekend, perhaps you could tell us which one you’ll be choosing? Also, how many of the three do you plan to watch?

2019 Leads 2018

With all the fantastic movies and shattered box office records we’ve seen in 2019, the question for many weeks has been whether it will outdo 2018. As we’re now comfortably in the third quarter, it’s a conversation that will continue as the weeks roll on (and still with Star Wars to come!).

If we look at July as a starting point, total box office revenues reached $1.28 billion. Although this was a 7% increase from 2018, it was a little way away from the overall record from 2011 ($1.39 billion). Across the whole of 2019, box office revenues are down, but experts and analysts predict a change before the year ends. Domestically, they believe that we may just beat the $11.9 billion of 2018.

When comparing the two, we see two very different years. While 2018 exploded out of the blocks with Black Panther and new monthly records, 2019 was slow and gained attention for all the wrong reasons with just $630 million taken in February. As the year has progressed, Disney has impressed, Avengers beat Avatar as the most successful film of all time, and there are more great movies to come.

Do you think 2019 will beat 2018 for box office earnings?
