No Season 5 for The Good Place as Creators End Popular Show

Considering the last thirty years has brought us shows such as The Big Bang Theory, Cheers, Friends, Frasier, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and The Office, it’s fair to say the standard in comedy has been raised. Though harder than ever for comedy shows to gain popularity or avoid being compared to these classics, The Good Place has found its own little niche in recent years. Now, it seems Season 4 will be its last.

A Show with a Story

For lovers of the show, you’ll perhaps take some solace in the fact that it hasn’t been cancelled. Instead, Michael Schur, the show’s creator, feels it’s the right time to lay the show to rest.

Starting in September 2016, The Good Place was first introduced on NBC and quickly captured the hearts of Americans. Kristen Bell plays the main protagonist, Eleanor Shellstrop, who has died and entered ‘The Good Place’. However, all isn’t as it seems as she feels there has been a mistake (she doesn’t deserve to be in The Good Place).

Over the coming episodes and seasons, we follow Eleanor as she tackles various challenges and the diverse range of people in her new neighborhood. Along the way, the audience is introduced to not only easy-to-watch comedy but also various elements of fantasy.

In just three seasons, the show has built a robust community and this news will come as a blow for many. Yet, leaving on Schur’s own terms is certainly better than a cancellation (as Brooklyn Nine-Nine fans nearly found out last year!).

‘I owe all of you a whole lot’

On Friday night, Michael Schur announced the news at a panel event celebrating the success of the show. Since, his words have circulated around social media and we’re sure this will continue as more and more fans discover the news.

Schur stated that the trajectory of the show was mapped out as soon as the second season was picked up by Universal TV and NBC. After exploring various ideas and themes, he now feels that over 50 episodes and four seasons is ‘the right lifespan’

Was there a temptation to keep riding the wave? According to his statement last night, the team were extremely tempted to go further, but they ‘didn’t want to tread water just because the water is so warm and pleasant’.

Michael Schur, also known for his portrayal of Mose Schrute in The Office and for writing Parks and Recreation, showed his gratitude towards the network, the creative team, and everybody involved in the show. He finished by saying they ‘look forward to a great final season airing this fall’.

One Last Moment in the Spotlight

If we look at Michael Schur’s successful history in TV, we can be excited for what comes next. For now, season 4 will be coming to NBC later this year for Americans and Netflix for our international readers!
