In truth, this is a headline we could have written weeks ago because this is the movie and TV show that dominated not only our attention at Celeb Network but the attention of millions around the world this year. To nobody’s surprise, it was Game of Thrones and Avengers: Endgame that stole the show at the MTV Awards after a year that has cemented their place in TV and movie history.
Avengers: Endgame
With Joe and Anthony Russo at the helm, Endgamewas always going to be in good hands. Considering the movie is the climax of everything that has been happening in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2008 and the release of Iron Man, it’s no surprise that it garnered massive attention.
To put the success of this movie into context, Avatar got to $2 billion in box office revenues in just 47 days…Endgame did it in 11. In the opening weekend, Endgame earned nearly double the amount of revenue as the previous record holder (Avengers: Infinity War) at over $1.2 billion. If nothing else proves the success of the movie, there’s a Wikipedia page dedicated to the records that it holds.
At the MTV Movie and TV Awards, it won the following;
Best Movie
Best Hero (Tony Stark/Robert Downey Jr)
Best Villain (Thanos/Josh Brolin)
Will anything topple the success of Endgame in 2019? We think Star Wars will have the best shot, and we’re going to discuss this in more detail later this week (so keep an eye out!).
Game of Thrones
In terms of reception, Season 8 of Game of Thrones can’t quite compete as over 1.5 million fans signed a petition to have the whole season remade. However, there’s an old saying in the world of art that says ‘you don’t have to make people feel good, you just have to make them feel’; Game of Thrones certainly did this.
Was there a lack of tact or thoughtfulness with how the characters were treated in the final season? Maybe, but this is the show that we all came to know and love. If every famous movie series and TV show was affected and influenced by the audience, they would be completely different (and arguably they would lose what makes them so great in the first place!).
Either way, it will go down as one of the most successful shows of all time. Although it didn’t exactly set the world alight with the first season in 2011, audiences steadily grew, and the world soon embraced the fantasy drama genre. With the final episode of Season 7, 16.5 million people watched and this set a record for US premium cable TV.
Much like Endgame, it won the biggest prize in its industry with the Best Show award.
The Future is Bright
What will be next to capture the world’s imagination? Nobody knows, but these two pieces of art have raised the bar and we can’t wait to see what comes in 2019 and beyond!
