While the NFL and NBA are in the off-season, there’s only one sports star on the lips of fans this week; Manny Pacquiao. At the ripe age of 40, he turned back the clock and had boxing fans on the edge of their seats once again this past Saturday.
Still able to draw big crowds, Pacquiao has done enough over the years to secure himself a place in boxing folklore. Yet, he isn’t content, and he added another brilliant story to an already fantastic book by beating Keith Thurman. Despite being ten years younger, and putting in a brave performance, Thurman eventually lost his unbeaten boxing record to the Filipino.
With this, Pacquiao is now the welterweight champion of the world which means that he has been a world champion in no less than EIGHT weight classes. Eventually, time will catch up with the legend and he will be forced to retire for good, but is there still enough energy left in the tank for Mayweather vs Pacquiao 2?
Big Money, Big Crowd, Huge Risk?
On Saturday in Las Vegas, boxing fans were euphoric when they spotted Floyd Mayweather in the crowd. Not only was he in attendance, he was seen jumping up and down in excitement when Pacquiao knocked Thurman down during the fight. After Pacquiao’s arm was raised in a split decision that has proved somewhat controversial, the attention of fans and sports pundits around the world turned to the potential second instalment of one of the most anticipated fights of all time.
Back in 2015, the world stopped to watch as the two giants battled it out in a fight that went the full twelve rounds. However, it didn’t quite quench the thirst for some because it was only a points victory for Mayweather, Pacquiao’s training had been littered with injuries, and the expected fireworks never really came.
Of course, Mayweather is now retired…but the Pacquiao camp has openly spoken in favor of the rematch. In addition to Manny confirming his interest, his trainer, Freddie Roach, has spoken to Fox Sports and noted that
I always thought that eventually Floyd would be one of our opponents again.
After noting his slight embarrassment at the first bout, he says that Manny had an injury and that he didn’t fight as well as he could.
Mayweather vs Pacquiao 2?
Mayweather retired back in 2015. However, he also retired back in 2008 before returning for another eleven fights. Even if age isn’t on his side this time around, there are plenty of big names that fought past the age of 40; Bernard Hopkins and George Foreman to name a couple.
It may be too late to see the second fight between these two legends, but one thing is for certain; the fans would love it and both would make lots of money (and we know how much Mayweather loves his money!).
