Mariah Carey and Others Perform in “Living Room Concert for America” but Elton John Couldn’t

The 73-year-old Sir Elton John was visibly impressed with Alicia Keys’ opening acoustic piano number to begin “The iHeart Living Room Concert for America” Sunday night that he resolved to sing his own song.

But there is a big problem: the singer is presently self-isolating at a house that is not designed for concerts, not even home concerts.

Sir Elton Explains Why

Elton John explains why he couldn’t perform in the richly decorated residence: “I have to be quarantined in the only house that I have ever been in without a piano.”

As luck would have it, Sir Elton served as a Master of Ceremonies as other performers sang joyfully in the concert that was streamed live and aired on Fox.

The Highlights

  • Billie Eilish

The Grammy-Award winner was sitting on a couch in her living room in Los Angeles. Her brother, Finneas was also with her to celebrate the first anniversary of her stunning Grammy-dominating album “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?”

The siblings performed “Bad Guy,” though an acoustic version of it.

  • Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey celebrated her 50th birthday on Friday. The lovely performer sang “Be My Baby” which was dedicated to her two adorable children, “for not complaining too much as they stayed at home with me.”

Carey, at the end of the song, said: “I’m going to put my gloves on, even in my house.”

  • Camilo Cabello

Camilo Cabello is presently quarantining in Miami with her boyfriend, Shawn Mended. He played the guitar, strumming “He’s taking over and just killing it” while Camilo sang “My Oh My.”

Oh, and she peeked at her iPhone for the understandably complicated lyrics.

  • David Grohl

David Grohl, donning a plaid flannel shirt also strummed an acoustic adaptation of “My Hero,” which was dedicated to first responders.

“And if you sing that last chorus each time you wash your hands,” Grohl said. “I think you will be in good shape.”

  • Demi Lovato

Demi showed up right from her home in New York City, playing the piano and singing a soulful adaptation of “Skyscraper.”

  • Ellen DeGeneres

The talk show host unabashedly admitted to wearing the same sweat pants for three straight days at home. Ellen introduced H.E.R. for her solo guitar performance across the country right from her beautiful living room in New York.

  • Tim McGraw

McGraw performed “Something Like That” while sitting in his home pool’s diving board. It was a beautiful one, despite a cameo by his dog and the sound of the wind in the background.

“We could do a whole concert like this,” he said.

  • Sam Smith

Sam Smith sang an a capella adaptation of “How Do You Sleep” right from his bedroom in London.

  • Russell Wilson and Ciara, his wife

The couple gave a beautiful view of their child-filled living room while Lady Gaga encouraged viewers to “find joy in any way they can” during this COVID-19 crisis.

The Request to Support Charitable Organizations

The performers encouraged their teeming viewers also to support two philanthropic organizations – i.e. First Responders Children’s Foundation and Feeding America – who are actively helping victims as well as first responders during the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Sir John said: “Everyone out there fighting to keep us safe is such an inspiration.” The performer, however, did produce his son’s keyboard. To end the concert, he sang a few lines from “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.”
