M Night Shyamalan Calls Hollywood A ‘Sick’ Place

Indian-American filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan is an incredibly well-recognized name in the industry. He has been behind many cult horror films, the most popular of which could perhaps be The Sixth Sense. He has also been behind other films, such as the psychological horror thriller Split. The director has been struggling to find much praise for his last few films, which include Old and Glass, to name a few. He now primarily works outside of Hollywood because he believes that the place is growing sick. His latest film, Knock At The Cabin, has received positive first reactions from audiences and critics.

Shyamalan’s Current Opinion Of Hollywood

Shyamalan has been a worker of originality and nuance. Even the new film has deep undertones that portray an interesting world. He feels that Hollywood now lacks these very qualities, and this has made him feel rather disillusioned. In his own words:

“If you look at the industry right now… there are movies that feel incestuous, they’re just masturbatory… It’s just Hollywood talking to themselves,” he said while speaking to reporters. “And then there are movies where they’re saying: the audience is dumb so we’re going to take all the soul out, and we’re just going to do it by numbers. These are signs of complete dysfunction.”

In Conclusion

It is clear that Hollywood has disappointed Shyamalan on multiple counts with everything that’s going on in it right now. The writer-director has faced negative reviews for a couple of his films which may have caused further distaste, but that does not stop him from creating new original stories. He believes stories are no longer an important aspect of films which wasn’t the case earlier. About this, he said:

“The industry was different then. It was aimed at — how do you get the best storytellers to tell stories for the widest audience? That’s not the case now,”

Currently, Shyamalan is on the receiving end of great positive feedback for Knock At The Cabin.
