When it comes to iconic moments in the celebrity world, the VMAs have hosted many. With this year’s iteration taking place this weekend, we’ve compiled some of the most memorable moments from the event. Will we see another added to the list on Monday?
Is there really anywhere else to start? Though sixteen years ago, it’s a moment that lives long in the memory for being…perhaps above all else, strange. As the pair came together with Christina Aguilera for a performance, they shocked the world with a smooch. Ever since, the image has become one of the most iconic from all live shows, awards ceremonies, and celebrity events.
Kanye West Stage Crash (2009)
Still in the early days of her career, Taylor Swift was announced as the winner of the Best Female Video award and everybody in the room (and at home) seemed happy for her. Sadly, there was one person who wasn’t happy and his name was Kanye West. Rather than keeping his displeasure to himself, Kanye crashed the stage and said that Beyoncé should have won for ‘one of the best videos of all-time’.
Miley Cyrus Performance (2013)
A dream for all celebrity news websites for the past decade, Miley Cyrus hit headlines back in 2013 when she twerked on the stage. Performing ‘Blurred Lines’ with Robin Thicke and then a song of her own, Miley left little to the imagination and gave a performance that would shock some and impress others.
Nicki Minaj vs Miley Cyrus (2015)
Just two years later, Cyrus was the center of attention again but this time after being called out by Nicki Minaj while accepting an award for the Best Hip-Hop Video. Within a moment, the award took a backseat and the attention was on Miley as Nicki responded to negative comments in the press. All Nicki needed to say was ‘What’s good?’ and the awkwardness in the air was clear to see (and hear!).
Drake Declares Love for Rihanna (2016)
Talking of awkward, we only had to wait twelve months and the same atmosphere was present as Drake declared his love for Rihanna…on stage…in front of thousands (and millions of people watching at home).
Howard Stern Entrance (1992)
Don’t worry, the shocking moments aren’t exclusive to the 2000s and Howard Stern proved this in 1992. He had a reputation for raunchiness, and this came to the fore when he appeared as ‘Fartman’, a strange superhero. Not only did he turn up in the strange outfit, he was even lowered onto the stage.
Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley (1994)
Finally, Madonna and Britney aren’t the only ones to share a kiss on the VMA stage. Nearly a decade earlier, it was Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley shortly after their marriage. With words that have gone down in history, Michael said ‘…and just think, nobody thought this would last.’ They would go on to divorce shortly after.
Let us know your favorite VMA moments. Also, is there a particular performance you’re looking forward to this weekend?
