HBO’s “Game of Thrones” broke and set new records for the most-nominated series for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards nomination.
The final season of the series was nominated 32 times making it the most showing for a single title since 1994 when “NYPD Blue” with 27 nominations had the record.
These nominations shot the cable network – HBO back into the leaderboard as the dominate TV production network ahead of Netflix. Netflix had during last year’s nomination bumped the cable network from its top position.
“Thrones” continued on its record-setting trend at the Emmys for a single series. It boasts as having the title for the most Emmys won by a series in a single season in 2015 and 2016 – winning 12 awards in those awards.
This nomination haul for the “Game of Thrones” comes despite the huge fan outcry and dissatisfaction with the final season of the show. These 32 new nominations bring the “Game of Thrones” Emmy awards nominations over the years to 161 – making it the most nominated TV series ever in the award’s history.
A bit of analysis of how the nominations came in show that the “Game of Thrones” performed brilliantly across the acting categories; plus, it did put in a good showing in the supporting drama actors and actresses’ categories – taking three out of seven spots and four out of six places in each group respectively.
The “Game of Thrones” didn’t only perform excellently in the acting roles; it also swept through the spots in the technical and backstage support categories. The series was also nominated in the cinematography, hairstyling, editing, music, makeup, sounding editing and mixing among others.
HBO’s other programs performed well. “Chernobyl” dominated nominations for the limited series category. “Barry” was the second most nominated show in the comedy category only behind Amazon Prime’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”
In all, HBO raked in 137 nominations making the most in the cable network’s history. Netflix came in second with 117 nominations – which is also the streaming platform’s most haul in its short history.
The Emmy awards in recent years are beginning to look like a two-horse affair unlike previously when HBO led the pack – in fact, for 17 consecutive years, the cable network had topped the list of most-nominated production house – that is until Netflix happened.
Last year, Netflix overtook HBO as the network with the most nominations with 112 nominations against HBO’s 108. However, both production houses were tied for the most Emmys won with 23 awards apiece.
Interestingly, Netflix has seen its nomination haul rise steadily within the short time it has been on the scene – 13 in 2013, 54 in 2016, and 91 nominations in 2017.
Though, the streaming service is still searching for its first major series win. However, with so many nominations in, one of their entries stands a good chance of nicking the award.
On the other hand, HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” Veep,” “Deadwood: The Movie,” are all believed to be favorites in their categories respectively.
