Have you been
craving Game of Thrones ever since the show finished earlier this year?
Well, you’re in luck because we have some great news. Although the show isn’t
returning as we know it, there is set to be a 10-part spinoff/prequel coming
up!
HBO
Announces ‘House of the Dragon’
Written by Ryan
Condal, who is perhaps best known for his writing on Colony, this prequel will
be set 300 years before the time we came to know and love in Game of Thrones.
Aside from this, what else do we know about the show so far?
- The story will center around Fire
and Blood, George R.R. Martin’s 2019 instalment in the series.
- Martin will co-executive produce on the
project.
- As ancestors of Daenerys, the show will
be a history of House Targaryen.
So far, ten parts have been announced in a season. But, considering the global success of Game of Thrones, fans will be hoping that House of the Dragon takes on a life of its own. For those worried about whether the prequel will be ‘too different’, Miguel Sapochnik will actually direct the pilot episode. Over the years, Sapochnik was a huge figure behind the scenes of the original and directed many of the best-reviewed episodes, this includes ‘Battle of the Bastards’.
Book
vs TV
For readers of the
original series, the differences between book and TV have been an important
debate over the years. Thanks to the nature of Fire and Blood’s first
part, it looks as though this debate will resurface once again. In the book,
around 140 years of Targaryen history is covered. Will the TV show move at the
same pace? Unlikely.
So far, experts
seem to be split in opinion. While some think the show will follow the events
of the book at a similar pace, others think they will slow things down and
focus on a few key events in more detail.

Jane Goodman Prequel
The news of this prequel
will be surprising for many given that the previous idea of a prequel was only
just cancelled. Written by Jane Goodman, who also
wrote the script for Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and Kingsman:
The Secret Service, Naomi Watts featured in a pilot alongside Jamie
Campbell Bower, Miranda Richardson, and Naomi Ackie. According to sources, it
took place thousands of years before Game of Thrones and featured the
first battle between White Walkers and humans.
In a busy time in
the TV world, it was also announced yesterday that D.B. Weiss and David
Beinoff, the Game of Thrones
writers, will not work on
the future Star Wars trilogy. After signing a contract with Netflix for future
projects, they didn’t feel it was possible to dedicate time to both so decided
on the latter.
So, House of the
Dragon will hit our screens in the future. Are you excited? Would you
rather they left the series alone? Let us know what you think!
