Quibi, the short-form media
platform, has released “The Fugitive,”
a reboot of the highly successful ABC TV series which ran from 1963 to 1967.
The major hit was later adapted into a movie starring Harrison Ford and Tommy
Lee Jones in 1993.
This movie also turned out to
be one of the biggest box office hits of 1993, with Harrison Ford as Dr.
Richard Kimble and Lee Jones as Deputy U.S. Marshal Samuel Gerard. He was the
officer that was tasked with tracking down Dr. Kimble, the man suspected for
the murder of his wife.
However, the medical doctor
managed to stay one step ahead of Gerard’s dogged pursuit before he succeeded
in capturing the real murderer and clearing his name.
“The Fugitive” was nominated for seven Academy Awards and was
the film that made Tommy Lee Jones to earn his first – and only – Oscar till
date.
“The Fugitive” reboot to be viewed on
mobile phones
Given the popularity of the
film, it is somewhat odd that “The Fugitive” has
not already been rebooted for the big screen. And although great
plans for a new adaptation is underway, movie buffs of the concept will only be
able to view it via their smartphones, and not in theaters.
The latest retooling of this
classic will arrive much later this year as a series on Quibi, the
short-form media platform. And it will star Body Holbrook (“The Predator”) and Kiefer Sutherland.
A little twist in the series
In the reboot of “The Fugitive,” the names of the
characters are not only different but also the concept has changed. The story
is no longer about a man fighting off the Feds and trying to prove he did not
murder his wife. It is about a man trying to prove he is not a terrorist.
The new series will still
stick to its original appeal which made both the TV and movie a hit. Sutherland,
typically, takes on the role interpreted beautifully by Lee Jones while
Holbrook interprets Ford’s character.
But the most impressive
aspect of this rebooted version of “The
Fugitive” is that it is on the short-form platform.
Quibi’s
purpose as a mobile media platform is to provide content with
running times not more than ten minutes per episode.
“Killing Zac Efron” is another program that is set to launch when
the mobile media platform kicks off in April. This is despite the fact that Zac
Efron himself was hospitalized while filming the program.
There is no doubt that
Quibi’s library of content will thrill audiences far and wide.
No
one knows how it will play out
The rebooted “The Fugitive”
is a fast-paced action series, but many have started wondering how it will play
out in such short installments.
No one has a clear answer to
that puzzle, at least not just yet. But if one is to judge by the first teaser
trailer, “The Fugitive” series may
just be the most suitable program for Quibi.
The new series is geared to
have 14 episodes with the entire series having a 140-minute run time if each
episode is no longer than 10 minutes.
So, let’s wait and see if
this new series will retain or beat the appeal it has had in the past.
