Final Day of President Trump’s UK Visit Marks D-Day Anniversary

75 years ago, Allied forces were preparing for a mission that would go on to mark the turning point of WWII. In 1944, service members knew that, in less than 24 hours, they would take part in the D-Day landings in Normandy and help to free mainland Europe from the Nazi grip that had been tightening in the years before.

In 2019, we know that the mission was a success and the war would end, in Europe at least, less than a year later. At the time, brave Allied troops didn’t have this knowledge and risked their lives to fight for freedom for a whole continent. This week, at Celeb Network, we’re paying our respects to all service members who fought in the war as the D-Day anniversary arrives.

Similarly, President Trump and Queen Elizabeth II have also paid their respects today as they visited Portsmouth together. Joined by many other world leaders, the Portsmouth Naval Base played a key role in the land, air, and sea landings 75 years ago. As a result, 300 veterans gathered for the D-Day commemorations.

In Portsmouth, the pair were also joined by Theresa May, departing Prime Minister of the UK, Justin Trudeau, Angela Merkel, Emmanuel Macron, and many other leaders.

The President’s Three-Day State Visit

After the service in Portsmouth, the Queen will officially end President Trump’s visit and he will go on to the Republic of Ireland. Although only a short stay, Trump has been vocal about a number of topics including the ‘special’ relationship between the UK and the US. Following similar comments in the past, he believes the relationship has ‘never been better’ and that both parties want a positive trade deal.

Elsewhere, he has also commented on the leadership race for the Conservative party as the UK prepares to welcome a new Prime Minister. Last week, Theresa May put an end to months of speculation and pressure to announce that she would be leaving on June 7. Unfortunately, Trump did make a slight mistake by telling May to ‘stick around’ for news on a trade deal. After aids laughed, Trump was forced to admit he wasn’t aware of how soon the Prime Minister was vacating her post.

No Progress on Climate Change Perspective

In an interview with ITV, Trump also discussed the royal family, the NHS, and climate change. For the latter, this wasn’t the first conversation of the trip after Prince Charles spoke with the President on the dangers of climate change and the immediate action required. Although they spoke for over an hour longer than originally scheduled, Trump announced that other countries were to blame, and that the US was a ‘clean’ country.

Later Wednesday, President Trump will land in Shannon, Ireland, where his first visit to the country will commence. After meeting with Leo Varadkar, the Prime Minister or Taoiseach, he will move onto his own golf course in Doonbeg before leaving on Thursday morning.

So far, marches and protests have followed Trump on his state visit and more protests are expected in Ireland.
