Fast and Furious 9: The Appearance of Dom’s Brother Sparks Confusion

The trailer of the latest Fast Saga – or “F9” is the official title of the 9^th installment of the Fast and Furious franchise – is out, audiences are thrilled. However, the introduction of Dominic Toretto’s brother, Jakob, has sparked confusion among movie buffs.

Dominic Torreto (Vin Diesel) has served as the protagonist for the franchise since its first installment in 2001. John Cena, former WWE superstar-turned-actor is set to portray the role of Dom’s brother, Jakob in “Fast and Furious 9”. And truth be told, the twist of Dom having a brother doesn’t make much sense to lovers of the franchise.

Fast 9 Hits Theaters May

F9, which is the penultimate film and the ninth in the franchise, is set to hit theaters in May. This film comes right after the second spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw” – which starred Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham – was released in 2019 and was a commercial success in the box office.

There have been several transformations over two decades of the franchise’s existence, the most prevalent being the trade in street racing for global threats and worldwide heists.

At the center of most of the Fast and Furious films are the core characters of Dom, his girlfriend Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), his sister Mia (Jordana Brewster), and Brian, enemy-turned-ally (late Paul Walker).

The Return of Han: A Big Surprise

The return of Han, one of the characters in most of the previous films, is another big surprise that hits movie fans in the face, right on the heels of the notion that Dom has a brother.

However, Cipher (Charlize Theron) is still in the mix, and now, Jakob has seemingly crawled out of the woodwork, both set to throw the entire world into chaos. Dom and his crew have a new challenge ahead of them, and hopefully, F9 will fill up some of the blank spaces, especially about Han and Jakob.

Jakob’s Story in F9: What We Know About Dom’s ‘Brother’

The first official F9 trailer provided a few insights into Jakob, John Cena’s character. The trailer revealed that it’s been a long, long time since the brothers have set eyes on each other.

And instead of a sincere reunion – which is expected between lost-but-found siblings – there’s apparent bad blood between them. It is safe to assume that Jakob is now the primary antagonist of Fast and Furious 9 as the trailer also reveals that he is working alongside the cyberterrorist, Cipher who was taken down – but not neutralized in “The Fate of the Furious”.

It remains unclear what brings Cipher and Jakob together, though it is evident that they both harbor the mutual urge to kill Dom and his entire crew. Jakob may have been involved in some of Cipher’s escapades, but this is the first time everyone is seeing him with her.

And Cipher knows that Jakob is Dom’s brother and is intentionally twisting the knife in the wound of the rivalry between the two Torretos.

Interestingly, Jakob is also a high-performance driver, just like his brother, Dom. So, what happened? What made them veer off in different directions? It will be interesting to see how the whole thing happened, and how it will play out, come May.
