Cruella de Vil Takes a Punk Rock Turn with Emma Stone

At Celeb Network, we’ve discussed live-action remakes quite frequently; now, one of our favorite topics is back as pictures are released of Emma Stone as Cruella de Vil for the first time.

An Origins Story

In a movie also starring Paul Walter Hauser, Emma Thompson, and Joel Fry, Emma Stone leads the way in what isn’t exactly a remake of the original. Instead, we’ll see a young Cruella de Vil and learn more about her younger years in the lead up to the 101 Dalmatians classic.

Of course, the most popular version from 1996 is itself a live-action adaptation from the 1961 original, which was animated. With this, there will be a new generation of Disney fans who will be able to enjoy the story of Cruella and her Dalmatians.

Tim Burton as Director?

No, but this was a comment that was frequently seen around the internet on Saturday since the image presented somewhat of a punk rock Cruella. With the signature black and white hair, the character is clearly distinguishable. Yet, the old fur coat has been ditched in favor of a full leather outfit. Once you add in the dull red lipstick and black eye makeup, it’s not surprising people have been linking the character with Tim Burton.

As is to be expected when working with a classic, not everybody was happy with the image. Although Twitter was mostly positive, some were suggesting that one of the main features of Cruella is her class and elegance…something that has been lost with their choice of clothing and makeup for Emma Stone.

However, as Emma Stone made a video appearance at Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, the reason for the clothing was revealed. Before an excitable crowd, the video suggested a 1970 London punk rock era setting for the movie.

Elsewhere in the image, Cruella is holding three leases for three aggressive-looking Dalmatians. Meanwhile, a man rests on a scooter in the background with a dog of his own and another man stands on the other side of Cruella looking intimidating.

2021 Release

Not long ago, we mentioned the fact that 2020 would be a quiet year for Disney and there’s evidence of this again after a 2021 release date was announced for this movie. We will see Mulan, Black Widow, and Artemis Fowl in 2020. On the other hand, 2021 will be a bumper year (just like 2019!) with the following;

  • Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
  • Indiana Jones 5
  • The Little Mermaid
  • Thor: Love and Thunder
  • Black Panther 2
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

In fact, three or four live-action movies are expected from Disney in 2021 as well as Pixar and other releases. Either way, we can’t wait to see more of Emma Stone as Cruella and we’re sure more images and videos will be released in the coming weeks and months!
