HBO officially announced it has ordered the development of
first prequel to the widely celebrated TV series ‘Game of Throne.’
The Cable network has ordered a prequel series to the
recently completed fantasy TV show “Game of Thrones.” Casey Bloys, HBO’s
programming president made the announcement on Tuesday, during a WarnerMedia’s
media event.
The announcement however, came after the TV network
said it is cancelling an earlier untitled prequel pilot starring Naomi Watts
(King Kong) had been axed.
The untitled prequel series which was set some 5,000 years
before the events of the original GOT series was ordered to pilot last year and
had even silently its pilot episode.
Bloys while speaking to reporters back in July during
Television Critics Association press tour said the pay TV channel is
considering “one or two more ‘GOT’ spinoff scripts. But we’re gonna see what
happens with this one.”
Fans can heave a sigh of relieve with the new announcement.
Speaking on the prequel titled “House of the Dragon,” Bloys said, the 10-episode
series is set 300 years before the events of “Game of Thrones” which traces the
rise and fall of House Targaryen.
House Targaryen is the family name of Emilia Clarke (Daenerys)
her brother Harry Lloyd (Viserys) and nephew Aegon Targaryen Kit Harington (Jon
Snow).
The story is based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood”
book which tells the story of the rise of House Targaryen through Aegon’s
Conquest and the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.
The show boasts an ensemble cast led by author Martin R.R.
Martin, writer of the “Ice and Fire” book. Ryan Condal co-creator of “Colony” and Miguel Sapochnik
who directed several of the fan-favorite episodes in the last ‘GOT’ including
“The Long Night,” Hardhome,” and “Battle of the Bastards.”
The three will act as co-showrunners and executive producers alongside
and Vince Geraedis.
“The ‘Game of Thrones’ universe is so rich with stories. We
look forward to exploring the origins of House Targaryen and the earlier days
of Westeros along with Miguel, Ryan and George,” Bloys said.
A short while after the announcement, the pay TV network,
confirmed the news on its twitter handle with a fiery new post captioned “Fire
Will Reign.”
The project will mark the first official follow-up project by
HBO since the end of the ‘Game of Thrones” which scooped several awards in this year’s
Emmy awards.
When is the earliest possible time to expect the release of
the Prequel?
There is no official timeline yet, however, if our experience
on how HBO released the last series is anything to go by, fans can
realistically expect the release of the pilot series sometime in early 2021.
Shooting and production will be completed by
September-October 2020 and then the pay channel TV will wait till Spring of
2021 a much more likely launch timely given HBO’s knack to premiere seasons of
GoT.
