Christopher Landon Talks ‘We Have A Ghost’ And Other Future Projects

Director Christopher Landon is well-known for his slasher serial killers films like Freaky and Happy Death Day. The former film features Kathryn Newton, who is currently doing the rounds promoting her new film Antman and The Wasp: Quantamania. Fans are eagerly looking forward to a crossover between Happy Death Day and Freaky, and while director Landon has teased that the two exist in the same universe, Blumhouse productions seem reluctant to give a green signal to such a crossover film.

Meanwhile, Landon has a new family dramedy film called We Have A Ghost. The film comes out on 24th February this year. So what’s special about it?

We Have A Ghost

The movie stars David Harbour, Jennifer Coolidge, and Anthony Mackie, among other fantastic actors. Since Landon’s style is very well known to the film world now, his films attract a very certain audience base, and this film is just the right type for his fans. Moreover, with famous stars like Harbour, who has been in the spotlight since he starred in Netflix’s Stranger Things, more attention is likely to follow.

The film also marks Landon’s new feat— making a film that costs more than $20 million to produce. He was also looking to make the new film a bit more comedic and mature at the same time so he could share it with his oldest child. Landon sat down with The Hollywood Reporter for an interview and said:

“I just didn’t want to get pigeonholed. I don’t want to have to make the same movie over and over again, and if you want something to change in your career, you have to kind of figure it out yourself.”

Clearly, the visionary director has his eyes set on growing as a creator with his new project. The director also spoke about how he’s looking forward to a Happy Death Day 3 film. While a Freaky Death Day crossover is the demand of the hour, the director seems more concerned with finishing his story for the third film in the Happy Death Day series.

“I have [Happy Death Day 3] in my head, and I know exactly what I want. It’s actually a bigger movie than the previous two films, and that’s part of the issue, ultimately,” Landon said. “This third movie needs a bigger budget, but since the second movie didn’t perform as well as the first, it’s a tall order. But I’m still holding out hope that Universal will give me a chance because it would be a really fun conclusion.”

Universal and Landon have to figure out a budget fit for the conclusion because fans can clearly not wait until the movie is released. All the studios around the world have suffered during the pandemic, and Universal is one of them. So budgetary restrictions that still haunt the projects aren’t something Landon is surprised by. He understands his approach but is also not someone who would settle for a smaller budget since it won’t do the film any justice.

His latest project, We Have A Ghost, is based on a short story first published in 2017 by Geoff Manaugh. The story revolves around a family that finds itself being haunted by a ghost, but instead of being frightened by its presence, the family decides to bring media attention to the ghost, making it a celebrity. The movie will show up on Netflix within a few days’ time for everyone to watch.

“I thought it was a really fresh take on a ghost story and something that I hadn’t really seen before.” Said Landon talking about the story. A fresh take on a fresh story awaits the audience only on Netflix.
