As we approach the one-year mark since the tragic passing of Mac Miller, progress has finally been made in the case and a Cameron James Pettit has been arrested and charged. A resident of Hollywood Hills, Pettit has federal charges against him suggesting that the drugs he supplied to Mac Miller were in fact counterfeit pharmaceutical drugs (containing fentanyl). In the early hours of Wednesday morning, special agents made the arrest alongside the Fusion Task Force from the Drug Enforcement Administration.
According to
the details in the case, arrangements were made on September 4, 2018, for
Pettit to supply the drugs to Miller. As well as 30 milligram oxycodone pills,
the delivery would include Xanax and cocaine. The following morning, everything
was arranged, and Pettit made the delivery. Rather than the agreed drugs,
Pettit actually supplied oxycodone pills that were counterfeit and contained
fentanyl.
As part of the
affidavit, we also know that Pettit sent a message shortly after Mac Miller’s
death. Sent to a friend, the message simply said, ‘most likely I will die in
jail’.
The
Danger of Fentanyl
For fans who
have been waiting on news, it may come as a shock and will also disappoint
many. In the affidavit, it clearly stated that Miller was also supplied with
drugs by another source, but these did not contain fentanyl and therefore were
not responsible for his death. Instead, it was only those supplied by Pettit
that caused the death.
Nick Hanna, a
US attorney, stated that attempting to disguise fentanyl as a pharmaceutical has
the potential to be very dangerous, as seen in this case and many others across
the country. Since more and more drugs are being laced with this cheaper
alternative, Hanna believes that dealers should be targeted aggressively to
reduce the number of deaths with this cause (and the opioid
crisis in
general).
As for Pettit,
he appeared in front of a judge and it was decided that there would be no bond
while he was held. Instead, a formal arraignment will take place on October 11.
Sadly, this isn’t the first time Pettit has been arrested on drug-related
charges as he was arrested twice in 2010 in Placer County, California. With the
criminal complaint, many discussions with Mac Miller were revealed and these
conversations are accessible through the official court papers.
Known
Substance Abuse for Miller
Unfortunately,
it was known that Miller had problems with substance abuse, and he was even
arrested back in May 2018 for driving while under the influence of alcohol.
After his passing, ex-girlfriend Ariana
Grande said
that he ‘didn’t deserve the demons he had’.
As a performer,
the future looked bright for Miller having already worked with Pharrell
Williams, Kendrick Lamar, and other big names. Working as EZ Max, his first
mixtape was released at just 15 and it was clear that he had talent. After his
death, many tributes came in including from Shawn Mendes, Snoop Dogg, and Chance
the Rapper.
