If you’ve been
keeping up to date with the domestic box office this week, you won’t be
surprised to hear that It Chapter Two dominated for the second week running
with around $41 million. In fact, it pulled in over $36 million more than the
film in third place, Angel Has Fallen. In second, Hustlers had a
solid first week with $33 million.
It
Chapter Two: A Success?
What does this
mean for the horror film? Well, this is the second consecutive week that it has
appeared at the top and it brings total box office revenues to around $154
million (accurate as of September 15th). On a larger scale, it has now
surpassed $320 million. With this in mind, will it go down as a success?
In terms of
worldwide revenues, it is now one of the most
successful R-rated franchises of all-time. It has already moved past every Conjuring
movie, and the drop from first week to second week is lower than many others.
For example, The Nun dropped off 65%, while Insidious: Chapter 2
fell 66% in its second week; people are still taking an interest in the film,
and this suggests that the numbers will continue to climb.
The
Lion King to Surpass The Dark Knight?
Although in cinemas for some time now, The Lion King still pulled in over $10 million internationally this weekend. In North America alone, it has just moved past Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and it looks like it will climb above The Dark Knight in a week or two. Given the acclaim The Dark Knight has in the movie community, this is no small feat for not only Disney but all involved in The Lion King remake too.
Hobbs
& Shaw Battling with John Wick 3
What about Hobbs
& Shaw? We’ve mentioned the fact that this is somewhat of a ‘filler’
movie between two of the franchise’s main movies, but Hobbs and Shaw
continues to surprise. This week, it was revealed that it would end its run with
a global box office of between $765 and $770 million. Although only $168
million domestically, it should become the first non-superhero Hollywood movie
to get past the $200 million milestone in China since Jurassic Park: Fallen
Kingdom.
Despite the lack of success at home, it seems Hobbs & Shaw will surpass John Wick: Chapter 3. Not long ago, we mentioned the prospect of the movie becoming the lowest-ever domestic box office despite getting $700 million worldwide, but this is no longer a possibility.
Elsewhere in
the movie universe, Angel Has Fallen is expected to rise above London
Has Fallen, Good Boys has now earned $73 million domestically, and Once Upon a
Time In Hollywood
is now second only to Django Unchained for Tarantino in terms of
domestic and global gross revenue; the former has also earned more than Inglorious
Basterds at just under $330 million.
