At the age of 18, it’s fair to say that Billie Eilish has already accomplished amazing things in the music world. However, her statements and actions away from the stage have been just as powerful as the performances on it. Just yesterday, she took to Instagram and posted a story saying that she would unfollow any abusers she was currently following if she received a DM about them. Around 30 minutes later, the story was removed. Now, though, her ‘following’ count stands at zero.
That’s right, she has an astonishing 64.8 million followers, but now no longer follows anybody in return. It comes at a time where many celebrities have been accused of sexual assault. Just this week, celebrities in the spotlight include Lili Reinhart, Justin Bieber, Cole Sprouse, and Ansel Elgort. It’s important to note that each one has refuted the accusations, and some are actually seeking legal action. It seems only time will tell whether these accusations have sufficient grounding or whether some are trying to take advantage of the current social environment.
For Lili Reinhart, she applauded those who are brave enough to step forward and tell the truth. She then went on to say that ‘this kind of lie can ruin lives and careers’. A little later, she said that her team were taking legal action due to the harm fake allegations can do to not only celebrities but real survivors.
Similarly, Bieber’s legal team have helped the star release statements surrounding the allegations. He said that ‘there is no truth to this story’. Of course, Bieber is no stranger to allegations and, back in 2011, he was accused to be the father of a three-month old baby. The Canadian singer claimed he was ready to take a DNA test, but the mother later withdrew her lawsuit.
Eilish and Social Media
Just recently, Eilish noted how she wants to use her social media platform for good. With this in mind, she has been posting her support of the Black Lives Matter movement as well as many others. Across the country, there have been reports of people not adhering to government guidelines regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. Soon after, Eilish gave a passionate post about how all fans should take the pandemic seriously.
In interviews and across social media, Billie Eilish has been seen as a role model since bursting onto the music scene. Towards the beginning of 2020, she released Not My Responsibility, and the music video addressed body shaming and the issues women face in society.
In a recent interview, she also claimed that she had never felt wanted or desired. Even in past relationships, the lack of feeling desired is something that has affected her into adult life.
She may not have felt desired, but she is certain admired around the world. In this latest social media statement, it could lead to more bravery and people speaking out about traumatic experiences in order to bring those responsible to justice.
