At Celeb Network, we love to celebrate musicians, actors, sportspeople, and stars of all ages and genders. However, last night it was an opportunity for all the women in the music industry to come together for a huge celebration. That’s right, it was the Billboard Women in Music Awards, and a huge night for Taylor Swift.
Swift
Takes the Woman of the Decade Award
It’s
hard to believe that Taylor
Swift
has been in the public eye for over a decade, but this is now the case. The now
30-year-old (her birthday is actually today!) has endured a turbulent year but
stepped up to receive the first ever Woman of the Decade award. Taking place at
the Hollywood Palladium, a packed audience gave Swift a warm reception as she
thanked Billboard and spoke about her twenties.
In what was an inspirational speech, Swift spoke about the power of the media and how they have always had something negative to say about her life. Whether it’s too much dating, showing too many pictures with her friends, or even being a villain. She said that she has
‘Watched women in this industry…criticized and measured up to each other and picked at for their bodies, their romantic lives, their fashion.’
In addition
to giving her views on the music industry as a whole, Swift also mentioned
Scooter Braun and the ‘toxic make privilege’ that exists with those who
support him. She said the Braun takeover of the record label not only took
place without her approval or consent, but without her consultation. We’ve
covered this story extensively, and now Swift says she was denied an
opportunity to buy her catalog before the sale went through.
Before
a standing ovation followed, Swift said that everybody in the audience should ‘stand
as an example for someone else in the next generation that loves the same thing
that we love.’
Other
Winners from the Magical Night
Elsewhere,
Billie
Eilish topped off her brilliant year by winning the Woman of the Year award; an
award that has previous winners of Fergie, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Beyoncé,
Ciara, and Taylor Swift herself. Meanwhile, Rosalia won the Rising Star award,
which was first won by Colbie Caillat back in 2008.
Who
has been a female pioneer in music this year? This is the premise behind the
Trailblazer award, and it went to Brandi Carlile. Other winners include;
- Icon
Award – Alanis Morissette
- Impact
Award – Alicia Keys
- Powerhouse
Award – Megan Thee Stallion
- Game
Changer Award – Nicki Minaj
With
regards to the Game Changer award, this was the first time it was given and
Minaj was the lucky recipient after 100
appearances on the Hot 100 Chart. Finally, we should mention Desiree Perez
who won the Executive of the Year prize.
Congratulations
to all winners; we look forward to another year of great music. Also, will
Scooter Braun comment on what Swift had to say? We’ll have to wait and see!
