The Elvis Presley biopic titled Elvis starring Austin Butler won Best Musical Film as well as the Best Scene Award. In the film, we see Butler transform into the late musician flawlessly thanks to modern technology as well as the actor’s unmatched talent. Austin worked on their voice and body movements of Presley for a very long time to get things right.
“It’s just this great big glorious marriage between the performing arts and the technical arts,” said Baz Luhrmann, the creator of Elvis. The scene that replicates Elvis’s first performance in Las Vegas has specifically captivated the minds of the jury.
Jon Landau, Avatar 2’s producer, accepted the Best Live Action Feature Film award and acknowledged the whole process and all the artists that work behind the camera and screens to create the magic on the screen. He asked the to continually “innovate technologies that allow filmmakers to tell stories that could not otherwise be told.”
Avatar: The Way of Water also won the Voices For the Earth award for the message it gives in the film. James Cameron wasn’t present during the award ceremony as he was in New Zealand at the time. However, he did have a recorded message ready to be played. Here’s what he had to say:
“We tried to have the greenest set possible when we were making the movie.”
It is clear that Cameron understands the necessity of preserving the planet. The theme is also heavily emphasized in both the Avatar films, where the planet Pandora is so full of life, life that would fight for the sake of their planet.
Other winners included Guillermo del Toro, who won the Best Animated Feature Film Award for his new film Pinnochio. Del Toro is incredibly famous for creating magnificent stories and creatures like the Pale Man in Pan’s Labyrinth. Recently, Del Toro partnered up with Netflix to release a series of anthological episodes. The horror series is called The Cabinet of Curiosities and is a masterful example of Del Toro’s expertise in the horror/fantasy genre. Clearly, technicians who work with him have a big hand in his productions, be it prosthetics or VFX work. All of Del Toro’s works are visually challenging to create, to say the least.
“We utilize technology and tools, but we use them as artists,” said Guillermo de Toro while accepting the award.
Among other winners was The Batman, the film won the award for Best Theatrical Audio. Robert Pattinson stars as Bruce Wayne in the new version of the character. The film is also expected to win multiple awards at the Oscars when it comes to cinematography and music.
So far, it seems that some of the leading contenders, like Avatar 2, Elvis, and Babylon, have shown some promise. Will the films continue to lead at the Oscars as well? It’s only a matter of time.
