The Peripheral is a show by Lisa Joy and Jonah Nolan. The two have become famous due to the success of the wild Mid-western/Modern Sci-fi drama Westworld. The Peripheral is based on a book by William Gibson of the same name. The first season shows us the story of a futuristic world where the main character realizes a certain link between a parallel world and time itself. The show has so far received a very positive response from the audience, and fans await for the story to unfold further in a new season. Thankfully for them, a new season has just been announced. Here’s the official plot of the show:
‘Set in the future when technology has subtly altered society, a woman discovers a secret connection to an alternate reality as well as a dark future of her own.’
About The Creators
Lisa Joy and Jonah Nolan are credited with the creation of Westworld. And now, they’re handling a storyline with similar connotations. The couple seems to have a strong liking for stories that have a lot to do with futuristic technologies. For those who don’t know, Westworld was about an amusement park where the rich could go to have their way with robots who were laced with AI technology so powerful that it made them almost human. The show had great performances from the likes of Sir Anthony Hopkins, Jeffrey Wright, Ed Harris, Thandie Newton, and Evan Rachel Wood. The 4th season of the show aired in 2022, and later, HBO announced that the series was being canceled, most likely due to a steady decline in viewership over the years. Sadly, Lisa and Jonah couldn’t complete their story.
The two filmmakers, who are also married to each other, have worked together on films like Fallout and Reminiscence before.
About The Peripheral’s Renewal
It is common for shows to be canceled once viewership declines. However, different streaming giants have different reactions to the decline. Netflix is notorious for canceling shows as soon as they’re not as popular anymore, and Westworld’s experiences have taught Joy and Nolan enough. The two have come over to Amazon, which is considered a bit more lenient with the way they treat shows. Regardless, The Peripheral was renewed for a second season likely because the show featured on Nielsen’s top 10 streaming chart during its finale week. That speaks tons in terms of how the people are receiving the show.
The first season started airing in October last year and released eight episodes ending its on December 2nd. The show is a part of the deal the creators signed with Amazon back in 2019, a year before the airing of Westworld’s fateful last season. Hopefully, with a new streamer to work with, The Peripheral will have a better fate than their last creation.
The Peripheral was brought into being with the help of Sharon Tal Yguado, the former head of genre programming at Amazon Studios. Sources say that Yguado helped develop the concept and project, and this ultimately helped with the execution of the idea.
The show stars Chloe Grace Moretz, Jack Reynor, Charlotte Riley, and Eli Goree, among other actors. So far, no release date has been announced for the second season, but it is likely to drop sometime next year or late this year, just like its predecessor season. The new season will see Grace Moretz’s character Flynne Fisher dive deeper into the alternate reality that affects her future in substantial ways. Some fans are calling the new show the equivalent of Stranger Things on Netflix but will the show gain similar fame? It’s only a matter of time.
