Amanda Bynes had her run of great fame back in the 90s. She was the star of The Amanda Show, which aired from 1999 to 2002 and stood its ground against popular shows of the time like FRIENDS and Family Guy, a show she would later end up working on. Many consider Bynes yet another victim of state-induced conservatorship.
Bynes has had a troublesome past that involved many run-ins with the law regarding drug abuse and possession, endangerment, as well as vandalization of a stranger’s property in Thousand Oaks. Recently, she was found roaming around naked in Hollywood and was taken to a psychiatric facility.
What Went Wrong?
Bynes was put under a temporary conservatorship under her mother in 2013. This came to be after countless instances of her having issues with drugs and being taken to court. She was charged with a DUI and possession of marijuana and accused of throwing a bong out of her window into the streets.
This isn’t the first time the former child star has been put under a psychiatric hold. Back in 2013, when she set fire to a stranger’s driveway in Thousand Oaks, she was held in a psychiatric facility for 72 hours. The actress was placed under conservatorship and would go on to accuse her father of abuse, both sexual and mental. Her parents claimed to be completely innocent, and the actress would then retract her statement saying:
“The microchip in my brain made me say those things but he’s the one that ordered them to microchip me.”
Clearly, things were not alright in the Bynes family. Her parents would get an extension of her conservatorship, and Bynes was later diagnosed with Bipolar disorder, which explains all the problematic events and behaviors. Her conservatorship lasted far more than it was originally meant to, with paperwork extending it up to 2020. In 2018, she claimed to be sober:
“I’m really ashamed and embarrassed with the things I said. I can’t turn back time but if I could, I would. And I’m so sorry to whoever I hurt and whoever I lied about because it truly eats away at me.”
She admitted to abusing cocaine and MDMA a lot during her years of substance abuse. Last year, in the month of March, Bynes filed to end her conservatorship because she believed her condition had improved and she could live independently.
With the help of her attorneys and her parents’ support, Bynes successfully had her conservatorship terminated on March 22, 2022. Now, a full year later, Bynes has been put on psychiatric hold again for 72 hours. According to reports, the actress asked a stranger for help and called 911 after having a psychotic episode.
Amanda Bynes ended up roaming around naked on the streets of Los Angeles. A source close to Bynes has confirmed that “She hasn’t been in contact with her family for quite some time.” Fans and family hope for a speedy recovery. Many people question whether ending her conservatorship was the right move.
“In the last several years, I have been working hard to improve my health so that I can live and work independently, and I will continue to prioritize my well-being in this next chapter,” Bynes had said in a statement when her conservatorship ended. “I am excited about my upcoming endeavors — including my fragrance line — and look forward to sharing more when I can.”
Ventura Superior Court had ended her conservatorship based on the fact that the grounds to sustain it were no longer valid. She was also reported to be living in a community of women where regular check-ins were made by a case manager. More updates are awaited.
