The world-renowned comedian and actress Ali Wong have finally opened up about her divorce from ex-husband Justin Hakuta. The two had a long-lasting marriage of about eight years. Wong has been very open about her struggles with the eventual divorce, and now, one year after, she has opened up about how it all felt.
Interestingly, their divorce hasn’t stopped them from being the best of friends, according to Wong. Hakuta and Wong called for a split back in April 2022. It has almost been a year since the two parted ways. But, even after all the problems, they still do all they can to be excellent parents.
“We’ve been through so much together. It’s a very unconventional divorce.” She said in an interview. Apparently, Ali Wong had come to the interview from a fresh game of pickleball with her ex, who will also be joining her on her next tour. There is no doubt that their divorce is certainly unconventional.
Family Reactions
Wong comes from a family of a Vietnamese mother and a father who is Chinese-American. So, her struggles were pretty much unforgiving at times. She especially faced trouble breaking the news to her mother.
The comedian is known for borrowing her comedic brilliance from heavy themes and emphasizing the absurdity and irony of some situations. But this one time, even Wong struggled with pain. After all, she’s only human.
“By far the hardest part about getting divorced was my mother’s reaction.” Her 82-year-old mother was very upset with the divorce. It was even more hurtful to know that she didn’t stand by it because of shame and pride. It was evident that Wong had to face the generational trauma expected out of any traditional Asian family. The fear of shame had her completely overwhelmed.
“I had told her before that I thought we might get divorced, and she was really upset. She looked me in the eye and asked, ‘Can you just wait until I die?’ She was literally asking me to not live a life for myself,” said Ali Wong in an interview. “It was still really fucking hard dealing with all her fear of the shame it would bring her.”
Upcoming Projects
Things are somewhat smoother for Wong individually and her little family, which includes her two daughters, Mari and Nikki. Reportedly, for her next tour. The tour draws from the fact that this is her first time doing a big-deal tour ever since she got divorced, which is why it has a very unique name to itself.
“I’m still workshopping it, but the bones are there and it came to me very fast. This is the first hour I’m doing since I started where I’m single,” she explained. “I think we’re going to call it the Single Lady tour.”
Her Mother and New Show
Wong was eventually able to deal with the problems that happened with her mother. She mentioned how her mother suffered but got over it in the end. Her divorce was very public, and her mother got a lot of messages and calls regarding it.
“They all called her,” said Wong. “She died a million deaths in one day and then woke up the next day and was like, ‘I survived.’ She still sees Justin a ton.”
Now, Wong is out promoting her upcoming project, where she stars opposite Steven Yeun. The Netflix series titled Beef will see Wong and Yeun as ‘two strangers get into a road rage incident that brings chaos into their lives.’ It is all set to release in the U.S. on the 6th of April and Wong has been very excited about the show!
