Quentin Tarantino Might Just Set Out To Make His Final Film ‘The Movie Critic’

Quentin Tarantino is one of Hollywood’s most esteemed auteurs. He has films like Django Unchained, Pulp Fiction, and Inglorious Basterds to his name, among many others. The director is very well known for his unique style of violence in every film, a bizarre love for feet shots, and absorbing storylines with the most talented actors Hollywood has to offer. Tarantino has always been open about how he has a limited number of films in him, and now, he may have just written the script for his very last film.

The Movie Critic

Tarantino is known for his obsession with history and historical dramas in one way or another. Themes like this are very visible in films like Django Unchained, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, as well as the war drama Inglorious Basterds.

Now, the writer-director is all set to direct a script being called The Movie Critic in the coming fall. The story is set in 1970s Hollywood, and very few details are known about it. It is rumored to be based on the real-life of Pauline Kael, who was a big-name Hollywood critic.

Tarantino is known to have deep and warm regards for Kael, who was so much more than a movie critic. She was an essayist and a novelist. Her fights with editors and filmmakers made her the subject of many headlines even before she accepted the position of consultant at Paramount. She had a fledgling and rather vibrant career until she died in 2001 at the age of 82. Roger Ebert, another critic, wrote about her, saying:

“Like George Bernard Shaw, she wrote reviews that will be read for their style, humor, and energy long after some of their subjects have been forgotten.”

Tarantino’s Career

While the current project doesn’t have a fixed studio producing it, perhaps Sony pictures could be at the helm. All of the details will only be revealed later, possibly around the time filming commences. However, Tarantino has made it very clear that he wishes to direct a certain amount of films by the time he turns 60. He wants to make ten films by the time he turns 60, which will be next month. Considering both the Kill Bill films as one, the director has so far created nine films. So this could certainly be his last one.

He has previously spoken about how directors can’t get better as time passes. He can’t afford to put up a bad film in his list of so many good films. The director has dedicated his life to his filmography, and he’d hate for it to be spoilt because of one bad film. In a 2012 interview, Tarantino said:

“I want to stop at a certain point. Directors don’t get better as they get older. Usually, the worst films in their filmography are those last four at the end. I am all about my filmography, and one bad film f—s up three good ones.”

He also spoke about how he didn’t want tasteless comic scenes to reduce the value of his film career. It just wasn’t for him. And at this stage, Tarantino has created some of the greatest films of the last few decades. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, his last film alone, had ten Oscar nominations and won two of them.

“I don’t want that bad, out-of-touch comedy in my filmography, the movie that makes people think, ‘Oh man, he still thinks it’s 20 years ago.’ When directors get out-of-date, it’s not pretty.”

It looks like Tarantino is all set to make an explosive ending out of his film career. A female lead is yet to be signed for his new project. More updates are awaited.
