$800 Million for Joker – Most Successful R-Rated Movie of All Time

Will Joker be as successful as The Dark Knight? Will Joaquin Phoenix be able to live up to the reputation that Heath Ledger has built for the Joker character? Will audiences respond to this incredibly brave attempt to bring the Joker back to our screens? Yes, yes, and…well, you can guess the rest.

After the early success, the only question left was how quickly Joker would surpass the Deadpool franchise as the most successful R-rated movie of all-time. The time has come, and the film is the first in this category to achieve over $800 million in box office revenues.

However, we should note that the success Joker is experiencing isn’t just restricted to the R-rated category. After 22 days, the film has earned around $264 million in the US alone. Interestingly, it has earned more than The Amazing Spider-Man and Captain America: The Winter Soldier in this same period.

If you’re interested in other records taken by Joker, it became the biggest ever October opening with its release earlier this month. Elsewhere, it’s the biggest ever opening for an R-rated DC film, a Joaquin Phoenix film, a Todd Phillips film, a drama, a Robert De Niro film, and more.

Internationally, Joker has earned around $540 million which makes it the most successful (in terms of revenue) R-rated movie ever. Furthermore, it’s the highest-grossing DC film in 30 countries and the highest-grossing Warner Bros. effort in 14 countries. With this in mind, it has done phenomenally well, and the questions now will revolve around just how far Joker can go.

Brilliant Response from Ryan Reynolds

Ryan Reynolds, who appears in both of the Deadpool movies (the first of which held the record before Joker), had a hilarious response to the news of Joker’s success. After beating the record, Reynolds posted on Twitter. The image shows the Joker movie art but with the word ‘Joker’ replaced with ‘You MotherF*cker’. The caption reads ‘R-Rated box office congratulatory posts aren’t like the ones you’re used to…’.

After this, fans on social media have been joking about the number of Joker references that will be applied in the third instalment of the Deadpool series. As a movie known to mock others, it will be interesting to see how quickly the company moves in altering the script and making light of the situation.

All over the world, Joker has been making waves and it’s fair to say that congratulations are in order. In Lebanon, the character has been a catalyst for the protests, and it looks as though this will continue as time goes on. Meanwhile, people from all over the world are gathering in New York City at the site of the famous staircase scene.

If you haven’t yet seen Joker, you seem to be in the ever-shrinking minority. If you have, let us know what you thought of the new record-breaker!
